VyprVPN vs NordVPN (2024 Comparison)

Are you shopping for a new VPN to boost online privacy and security? You might be stuck between a rock and a hard place. Perhaps, you’re thinking about buying VyprVPN or NordVPN but are unsure which one to choose. In that case, consider yourself lucky.

Today, we’re giving you a detailed look at our VyprVPN vs NordVPN comparison for 2024. These are very interesting providers, each offering a fair share of features. VyprVPN has been one of the first providers to receive a third-party security audit – quite enticing.

NordVPN, on the other hand, has existed (and still exists!) for more than a decade, securing millions of users on the internet. The providers in question share a lot of common features but in many ways, they’re very different. In this article, we’ll go through 9 tests to see which one is better.

When talking about our tests, we’ll cover everything there is to know about VyprVPN and NordVPN. Of course, we’ll take their prices into consideration too, as this will determine the better provider for the money. Without further ado, we think it’s time to start this battle – it’ll be a fierce one!

VyprVPN vs NordVPN: Apps & Ease of Use

VyprVPN is a safe VPN with easy-to-use apps for all platforms. NordVPN is nothing worse, with even better-looking applications for every system under the Sun.

VyprVPN and NordVPN excel in device compatibility, having native clients for all desktop and mobile platforms. To be precise, both support:

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux
  • iOS
  • Android

However, there are some major differences here. NordVPN natively works with Firestick and routers, whereas, VyprVPN lacks a bit in this regard. It requires an APK file and the sideloading method on Fire TV Stick with the router support being really subpar.

Moreover, NordVPN offers really amazing VPN browser extensions that are almost fully fleshed-out VPN apps. In fact, it’s regularly cited as one of the best free VPN extensions for Chrome. VyprVPN has a simple proxy instead, which isn’t particularly fast or capable of unblocking geo-restricted platforms and services.

One point on which VyprVPN beats NordVPN is the number of simultaneous connections. VyprVPN is “limited” to 30, which is quite an astonishing number. However, NordVPN gives you just SIX simultaneous connections. In 2024, you’ll agree this is a lot lower than expected.

VyprVPN

Nevertheless, in our NordVPN vs VyprVPN analysis, we should compare their apps and ease of use as well.

VyprVPN is a good-looking service, with simplistic apps for all devices. Even better, they’re almost identical to each other, so the learning curve between the devices is non-existent.

VyprVPN App 1
© 01net.com

On desktop platforms, you’re getting a mobile-like experience. There’s a small interface with a big blue connection button that connects you to the selected server. By clicking on Servers, you open the server list where you can select the country to use.

The menu Customize lets you change various settings. Here, you can utilize a kill switch, enable or disable different features, or select from a few protocols that the provider has. The app is extremely simple and doesn’t allow for a wide array of features.

The good thing is that we found no issues with the provider’s apps. Everything flows smoothly and all apps are very snappy, most likely because of the cutting-edge protocol that VyprVPN comes with. More about that later in this NordVPN vs VyprVPN comparison. Mobile apps tell the same story, though.

You’ll be getting the same-looking interface and almost all of the options from Windows/macOS. Both iOS and Android users will be satisfied and enjoy a premium-grade experience.

NordVPN

While VyprVPN passed this test with flying colors, there’s something very special about NordVPN. First, the provider is much more robust, with a huge selection of features on mobile and desktop platforms. Then, its apps have a breath of sophistication that all VPNs lack in comparison – even ExpressVPN!

NordVPN Windows New
© 01net.com

There’s a big world map that you can use to connect or simply open the server list and click once on the location. NordVPN offers a boatload of options all of which are accessible through the menu on the left. By extension, this is also a more complex but equally simple-to-use app.

NordVPN is fast, smooth, and responsive, which is all you need. Plus, there’s the option to customize the look of the app by using dark/light themes. This VPN is paired with an antivirus, which can be accessed through Settings, where you can also easily select the protocol.

We like that the app has the option to see your level of security. Here, you’ll get suggestions about which settings to enable to increase your security and be safer online. Like VyprVPN, NordVPN’s mobile apps are excellent – and even more than that.

They resemble the same look as Windows & Mac apps, with almost the same selection of features. For example, there’s Meshnet for remote control and access which users can use even on their iOS and Android phones. Mind you, this feature is unique to NordVPN – you won’t find it anywhere else!

Who Wins?

In this VyprVPN vs NordVPN duel, VyprVPN has 5 times more simultaneous connections. However, NordVPN has better-optimized apps with better aesthetics, on top of which, it supports more platforms with native clients.

That said, NordVPN WINS the first round and VyprVPN’s simultaneous connections aren’t enough to snatch a win. Better luck in the next part.

Security & Privacy: Which One Is Safer to Use?

Okay, so if privacy and security are your main concerns, which provider should you buy – NordVPN or VyprVPN?

Well, we can all agree that BOTH are safe and secure but some differences are here. Let’s divulge all of their security features and see what’s on the table.

Security Features

First, we’ll talk about their similarities or better said – identical features. VPNs all work the same with the exception of P2P VPNs that work a bit differently. NordVPN and VyprVPN are “standard” VPNs, which means they use AES-256 encryption to secure your connection.

Furthermore, both providers have essential features necessary for keeping you safe. The kill switch is shared by both, with PrivateDNS being another important feature that both providers have. Another thing to mention is split tunneling.

NordVPN also has it but on all platforms, while VyprVPN skimped a bit by introducing it only to mobile apps. It’s 2024 and the feature is still not available in desktop apps – come on, you can do better, VyprVPN. Finally, IP and DNS leak protection is here on both sides.

This is important to ensure no leaks that would destroy your privacy. Indeed, during our VyprVPN vs NordVPN comparison, we had no issues with those, so the leak-prevention capabilities of both providers are exceptional

What Are the Differences?

No doubt, NordVPN is a more feature-rich service than VyprVPN.

But how are they different? Well, exactly in this regard!

VyprVPN has advanced protocols like WireGuard and Chameleon, aside from OpenVPN/IKEv2 protocols that we’ve seen a million times.

WireGuard excels in speeds, performance, and security, while Chameleon is an anti-censorship option developed by VyprVPN. NordVPN’s protocols aren’t as numerous and you get two options – OpenVPN and NordLynx.

NordLynx is an in-house protocol based on WireGuard and is a jack of all trades, meaning it works phenomenally in all cases. Moving on, NordVPN has many more features that VyprVPN lacks. One of them is Threat Protection, which is an antivirus, malware protection, and an ad blocker in one.

Then, NordVPN includes Meshnet, which we already mentioned, plus Double VPN, which doubles your encryption. Another perk is obfuscation, which comes in the form of obfuscated servers that show impressive performance in China, Iran, and Russia.

NordVPN also includes a Dark Web Monitor to ensure your email isn’t compromised. We like the provider’s RAM-only servers as well, whose presence is crucial for privacy. VyprVPN lacks them, as you can guess. The advantage of NordVPN is that it offers all of these features across all devices.

VyprVPN is a mixed bag here. While it offers split tunneling on mobile devices, its option to block malicious sites is here only in the macOS app. Why not include these features – or some of them – in iOS or Windows apps? We have no clue.

Is There a No-Logs Policy?

Logging practices are quite important when picking a VPN. You don’t want your VPN to keep logs of your online footsteps or IP address. Thankfully, both are safe in this regard. NordVPN is based in Panama, a privacy-friendly country and a well-known offshore location.

VyprVPN, however, operates under the US jurisdiction and its parent company is from Texas. This isn’t great in terms of privacy, as we’re talking about a 5 Eyes country known for surveillance and data collection. The good thing is that both services have third-party audits – wonderful.

NordVPN No Logs
© NordVPN

Here, we can see that NordVPN’s logging practices are minimal. It keeps no logs of your browsing history, IP address, DNS requests, geolocation, timestamps, connection logs, etc. The only thing we can mention here has to do with your payment method and email address.

These bits of data are necessary for the subscription to work. VyprVPN, as you see below, is clearly a no-logging service as well. Much like NordVPN, VyprVPN stores absolutely ZERO sensitive information on its servers, despite being a VPN from Texas.

VyprVPN No Log
© VyprVPN

After all, we mentioned its third-party audit, which only increases its trustworthiness and ensures the VPN is genuine. However, we must give credit to NordVPN’s Panamanian jurisdiction, which is simply more private than Texas, a large US state.

Who Wins?

In the end, we can say that both services in this VyprVPN vs NordVPN duel are safe and secure. Still, NordVPN WINS this round by offering significantly more features than VyprVPN. On top of that, its jurisdiction is far better and it has more third-party audits than its rival.

Finally, we should again mention its extraordinary RAM servers which VyprVPN lacks. This feature is extremely important in 2024 and we found the lack of will of VyprVPN to innovate quite disappointing. Hence the result of 2:0 for NordVPN so far.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN Streaming Test

As we move on with our NordVPN vs VyprVPN comparison, we need to discuss streaming. Let’s start with VyprVPN because there’s not much to talk about here. VyprVPN is laughably BAD in this regard, as it isn’t working with a single Netflix library – quite a surprise.

Our team tested it numerous times, not only using WireGuard but all the other protocols. Netflix US, Canada, Japan, and other catalogs simply wouldn’t “budge.” Even if you go beyond Netflix and try to access HBO outside of the US, you’ll have disappointing results.

We were quite infuriated that the provider wasn’t working with BBC iPlayer, Hotstar, Disney+, or anything. Hey, it’s a premium service with not the cheapest price – how can something like this happen?! Well, we don’t want to put too much energy into thinking about that. Instead, let’s talk about NordVPN.

This provider has state-of-the-art streaming capabilities. First, it works with 16 catalogs on Netflix. Second, it can unblock any streaming platform you throw at it. From BBC and ITV to HBO, Disney+, Hotstar, ABC, and many others. While we’re at that, the streaming performance is impeccable.

NordVPN is bringing its A-game thanks to NordLynx, which boosts streaming speeds and makes even 8K videos on YouTube buttery-smooth. If you’re using the VPN for YouTube TV, you’ll also be happy, as it’ll allow you to change your region and access more content.

Not to mention the various TV channels that this provider can access. And, to make things better, there’s SmartPlay, which lets you take advantage of SmartDNS. This way, you can stream on gaming consoles, Apple TV, Smart TV, and other platforms where the VPN isn’t supported natively.

Who Wins?

Do we need to discuss the result? It’s clear that NordVPN WINS this round against VyprVPN. VyprVPN is, for some reason, surprisingly bad for streaming and couldn’t unblock any major streaming service in this test. Such a shame, really.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN Speed Comparison

Given NordVPN’s undeniable qualities, you can guess its speeds are lightning-fast. But how does VyprVPN stack up against its opponent? This is the question that we’ll be answering today. First, we’ll need to discuss our testing parameters because they are the most important.

At the time of writing this VyprVPN vs NordVPN duel, we were in Europe. Knowing that, the first thing we did was a speed test without using a VPN. This is what we call native upload/download speeds and latency. Let’s take a look at them:

Native Speeds
© Speedtest.net

Here, we achieved a download speed of nearly 120 Mbps, with the upload speed being nearly 15 Mbps. It can be seen that the ISP is throttling our speeds but hey – that’s what you get for not using a VPN. Nevertheless, we tested NordVPN and VyprVPN for 3 days in a row, 3 times a day.

We also used 4 server locations, the UK, the US, Australia, and Japan. The results you see below are the best-case results using the default protocol in each VPN. In VyprVPN, it’s WireGuard, while NordVPN’s default choice is NordLynx – two very similar protocols.

With all the parameters in place, the speed test results look like this:

Who Wins?

We can see that NordVPN WINS yet another round against VyprVPN. Just look at the results above. NordVPN is incredibly fast compared to VyprVPN, which displays a noticeable speed reduction even when using a server in the UK, which is the closest to us out of all 4.

VyprVPN isn’t the slowest provider we tested. However, when pinned against NordVPN which exhibits extreme levels of performance, this provider can’t help but falter in comparison.

Torrenting: NordVPN vs VyprVPN

We always say we don’t recommend torrenting without a VPN. This activity is simply too dangerous, especially if you’re in the US or one of many European countries. But which VPN to use for torrenting, VyprVPN or NordVPN? We’d say both.

To be frank, torrenting isn’t such a big challenge for premium services. In 99% of the cases, a premium service will allow torrenting on pretty much all servers. The only thing you’ll do, henceforth, is connect to the server and start downloading.

VyprVPN P2P
© 01net.com

In the screenshot above, you can see that VyprVPN works properly. We used a server in Austria since it’s very close to us and we had no speed reductions. Granted, our upload speed was close to 0 B/s for some reason but that changed and increased periodically.

It’s worth noting that its small server fleet, which we’ll discuss later, is 100% P2P-friendly. We can say almost the same about NordVPN, except for the small server park. This provider offers special P2P servers that optimize their performance for torrenting and all P2P activities.

NordVPN P2P
© 01net.com

In NordVPN, we used a torrenting server in Bulgaria and achieved phenomenal results. The service showed no speed reduction either and the entire process was quick. NordVPN offers thousands of P2P servers, though, but you can always use “normal” servers as well.

Honestly, there’s not much of a difference in this case. We noticed both types of servers are fast and allow for torrenting, so you don’t need to complicate your life. Just go for any server – the fastest one if possible – and go for it.

Who Wins?

In the end, should you use NordVPN or VyprVPN for torrenting? Again – both. This round is a clear DRAW, as VyprVPN and NordVPN stand neck-to-neck. They’re both suitable for torrenting, providing fast speeds, plenty of security features, and solid privacy to stay anonymous.

Are VyprVPN and NordVPN Working in China?

China is the epitome of online censorship, and might we add, a representation of the bleak dystopian future we might be facing at some point. Website restrictions, constant tracking, and harsh punishments are only some of the things its residents experience. The VPN here is a necessity!

However, VyprVPN and its Chameleon protocol don’t seem to work all that well. We have a few testers in China who used VyprVPN, only to report that the service won’t connect. This, by the way, rings true when using WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 protocols too.

We find this strange, as Chameleon applies the necessary obfuscation to bypass the DPI (deep packet inspection). On the brighter side, Iranian residents will enjoy this VPN, as it’ll work in that, and a few other countries like the UAE, Qatar, and Russia, so Chameleon isn’t totally useless.

NordVPN’s obfuscated servers are far from useless, however. This provider works in China, with very minor and few setbacks from time to time. Obfuscated servers do the same as Chameleon but they rely on the OpenVPN TCP protocols known for being able to circumvent censorship.

This protocol is a bit slower but that’s the price to pay for this commodity. Interestingly, when it works, and it does so often, you’ll have no performance issues in China. NordVPN remains fast and reliable, so even streaming and light gaming is possible.

Keep in mind that NordVPN’s NordLynx won’t work in China, though. You’ll have to use strictly obfuscated servers if you want to make it work. In other, less censored countries, we found NordLynx to suffice. For example, in the UAE, Turkey, and a few others.

Who Wins?

NordVPN WINS this round by being a better option than VyprVPN for bypassing censorship. We found it much more dependable compared to VyprVPN, which couldn’t work in China no matter what we tried. Again, a shame since the company heavily advertises its Chameleon protocol which ended up being a failure.

VyprVPN vs NordVPN Server Fleets

Choosing between VyprVPN or NordVPN seems like an easier choice if you take into account their number of servers. One VPN is much larger than the other and we think you can assume which.

VyprVPN (700+ servers in 63+ countries)

In our comprehensive review of VyprVPN, we criticized its overwhelmingly small server park. The provider has just 700 servers in 60+ countries. This wasn’t a problem 3-4 years back.

In 2024, it IS a big problem because the company retained the same server network from its inception.

VyprVPN Servers
© VyprVPN

In other words, it made no improvements, added no new servers, and didn’t improve any server-related technology. Why not include RAM-only servers, for example? We have no idea. Did VyprVPN suffer from the lack of a budget? Again, we have no clue.

While the server distribution isn’t overly bad, the number of servers is critically low for a premium service. Let’s be honest – VyprVPN is mildly popular, so it still gets thousands of daily users. This can easily result in overcrowding and the loss of performance, as shown in this comparison.

We don’t have complaints about its number of countries – in fact, it’s larger than NordVPN. But we think the provider could easily add at least 700-1,000 more servers to make it even remotely competitive. Even in this case, it would be much smaller than ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and NordVPN.

NordVPN (5,500 servers in 60 countries)

NordVPN tells us a different tale – one with a happy ending. This provider has 5,500 servers in 60 countries and both numbers make us smile. For example, there are 2,000+ servers in the United States, which is 3 times more than the entire server network of VyprVPN.

NordVPN Servers
© NordVPN

Let’s not forget about various technology advancements that NordVPN made. It bases its servers on RAM rather than old-fashioned hard disks. Moreover, these are 10 Gbps servers, which NordVPN plans to upgrade to 20 or even 40 Gbps in the future.

Not only that but the service has plenty of specialty servers, which we found handy. They include obfuscated, P2P, Double VPN, and onion over VPN servers. The last servers are very useful, as many users go on the dark web with them safely.

This provider simply stomps over VyprVPN in every sense of the word. You can’t even compare them, as 5,500 is nearly 8 times more than 700 – that’s the extent of NordVPN’s size and robustness. Yet, it offers about 3 countries less but that’s not even worth mentioning, as the difference is negligible.

Who Wins?

Once again, in this part of the duel, NordVPN WINS by being a much larger provider than VyprVPN. It offers more advanced servers in more countries. Simply put, it beats its rival in both quantity and quality, which makes the win that much more convincing.

Customer Support: VyprVPN or NordVPN?

If you’re seeking a VPN with proper customer support, VyprVPN and NordVPN will do just fine. 24/7 live chat support is an integral part of both services, so getting quick help is possible. We noticed that both respond pretty hasty, with NordVPN being a tad faster overall.

However, this difference is negligible, especially when talking about helpfulness. Apart from that, both providers come with email support whereas NordVPN is, again, a bit ahead in terms of response time. We found NordVPN’s email support extremely fast, with responses given in less than 10 minutes.

VyprVPN will get back to you in about 20-30 minutes, which also isn’t too slow. Other support methods include a Blog section in both VPNs, FAQs, Help Centers, etc. NordVPN’s Help Center is a bit more robust, with plenty more articles and solutions to potential problems.

But this VPN also supports more devices, so it’s nothing strange. Finally, NordVPN has an excellent YouTube channel and is pretty active on social media, unlike VyprVPN. This is another method of contact that can, in some cases, be very helpful if you don’t want to chat directly.

Who Wins?

In general, both providers in this VyprVPN vs NordVPN comparison do just fine when talking about customer support. However, NordVPN WINS this round by having a slight edge in response times and a more robust Help Center. It’s not a huge margin by any stretch but enough to snatch a win.

VyprVPN vs NordVPN Pricing Comparison

Looking to save money on a VPN subscription? If that’s the case, should you buy VyprVPN or NordVPN? Well, let’s look at the final comparison for today – the one about pricing. Since we mentioned VyprVPN first, let’s start with its price.

VyprVPN

VyprVPN Pricing
© VyprVPN

Its pricing structure is overly simple, with only two subscription plans to pick from. You get a monthly plan at $10 per month and then, there’s the 12-month plan at $5/mo or $60 every year. What can we say? Well, VyprVPN surely isn’t the cheapest option around.

At $5 a month for a 12-month plan, it’s definitely cheaper than ExpressVPN (see our VyprVPN vs ExpressVPN analysis), for example. But when compared to CyberGhost, NordVPN, Private Internet Access, or even Surfshark, it ends up being more expensive. Does it offer more, you might ask? The answer is a big, bold NO.

NordVPN

Speaking of NordVPN, we should talk about its price. This VPN’s pricing structure is a lot more complex, as we have 3 plans for each duration.

Get NordVPN Now

Its plans are divided into 2-year, 1-year, and monthly plans as well. Let’s take a look at the annual plans first to make sure we have a fair comparison.

NordVPN 1 Year Pricing
© NordVPN

As you can see, the Standard plan costs as much as VyprVPN per month, so you’re paying the same price for the first year. Granted, NordVPN’s renewal price is a bit higher, so in the long run, this ends up being a more expensive provider. But what about its 2-year plans?

NordVPN 2 Year Pricing
© NordVPN

Once again, the price is cheaper at first. An interesting deal is the Plus plan, which costs the same as VyprVPN per month but includes NordPass for managing your passwords. Again, if we factor in the renewal price, this provider will be more expensive.

NordVPN Monthly Pricing
© NordVPN

Last but not least, we’ll examine the price of NordVPN per month. Here, we have no doubt that the provider is more expensive, especially when talking about Plus and Complete plans. The good news is that both providers offer a 30-day refund policy for all of their plans.

This means that, if you end up not liking your choice, getting a refund is possible. In that case, you can always get another VPN with the same money, for example.

Who Wins?

Although NordVPN is a better provider overall, it also comes with a higher price – not surprising. That’s why VyprVPN WINS this round by offering a more streamlined pricing structure with far more budget-friendly plans.

Conclusion: NordVPN Wins Against VyprVPN!

With all 9 tests out of the way, we need to do some math. The final score is 9:2 for NordVPN, which is the clear winner of today’s fierce battle. So, what can we say about the entire VyprVPN vs NordVPN comparison? Is VyprVPN a provider we consider bad or unworthy of your time/money?

To be honest, not exactly. VyprVPN has qualities, such as great security/privacy, easy-to-use apps, 30 simultaneous connections, solid customer service, and relatively affordable prices. However, NordVPN is a household name in the industry and definitely the provider that is hard to beat.

Sure, NordVPN is more expensive than VyprVPN and you’ll have to shell out a bit more money to enjoy it. Your enjoyment, on the other hand, will be greater, as this service crushes its opponent to tiny bits. It’s better in terms of device compatibility, performance, streaming, and even security and privacy.

Not to mention NordVPN’s huge server network, round-the-clock customer support, and advanced features like Meshnet, Double VPN, and Threat Protection. As a package, NordVPN is far more advanced and it feels so much more premium compared to VyprVPN which stagnated over the years.

In the end, we need to recommend one and that would be NordVPN.
