When it comes to the VPN marketplace, not all providers are treated equally and some are more popular than others. We’re all aware that providers like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost are great, and thus, the three of them have tens of millions of users combined.

That’s not to say that less popular providers are usually bad. One big surprise would be Atlas VPN. In our test of Atlas VPN, we showed that a cheap and affordable provider can also be solid. And then, there’s VyprVPN which spent quite a lot of time on the market perfecting its formula.

VyprVPN is by no means a new kid on the block and being the first company to receive a third-party security audit, it surely has a lot to live up to. Not to mention that it’s based in Switzerland, the same country as ProtonVPN, so it’ll be interesting to see just how safe and secure it is.

Of course, we’ll talk about all of that in this VyprVPN review for 2024 and do some in-depth testing and evaluation to see if it’s worth testing out. I know many of you haven’t heard of this provider and if it spiked your interest, it’s always better to read a quality VyprVPN test and review before buying it.

VyprVPN User Experience & Device Support

The start of this VyprVPN review will be about the overall user experience and device support. Device compatibility of VyprVPN isn’t the best, to be honest, as the provider made some interesting choices in this regard.

However, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. For the start, I’ll mention that you get 5 simultaneous connections on a single account, which I found decent but not impressive. Now, it’s important to mention that VyprVPN works on almost all desktop and mobile platforms.

However, not every app has the same features, which I’ll touch on a bit later in this VyprVPN test.

Desktop and Mobile Apps

When it comes to desktop and mobile apps, the provider offers native clients for:

• Windows
• macOS
• iOS
• Android

You’ll notice that a VPN for Ubuntu or Linux isn’t on the list here and that’s because VyprVPN doesn’t support it. That’s, for me, quite a shame, as I expected full Linux support in 2024. On the other hand, there’s support for devices like QNAP and Blackphone, which I think is irrelevant in today’s age.

But what’s it like to use VyprVPN, you will ask? And I’ll answer simply – it’s good… but it’s still far from the best VPNs for Mac, for example. The provider brings nothing groundbreaking to the table and its desktop client wasn’t updated in a long time, yet, it still doesn’t look as outdated as, let’s say, Private Internet Access desktop clients.

The app sports a greyish interface with a big, blue connection button, a country, and three separate menus. You can open the server list by clicking on the country or selecting the “Servers” menu where you can see the server list according to certain parameters.

You can list it from A to Z or by ping, to make sure you get the fastest server. You can also click on “Fastest Server” to get the best performance. Clicking on the Customize menu, you can see all of its settings, and since there aren’t many of them, the menu is fairly simple.

VyprVPN even lets you add certain server locations to favorites and that’s pretty much all. We can say the same about its mobile application that looks, more or less, the same. It’s all very simple and intuitive, which is partly because it isn’t feature-rich and partly because of the interface design.

TV Apps

What if you’re looking to stream geo-restricted content on your TV? Well, in that case, you’ll search for a VPN. But if you come across VyprVPN, I’ll disappoint you and say that its TV support is limited. Indeed, the provider has no support for Fire TV Stick.

In 2024, that’s a cardinal sin, especially for a full-fledged premium VPN with no free trial. The silver lining is that you can get its application for Android Smart TV from Google Play but that’s because it already supports Android and it’s logical that the app will work.

Testing it on my Android TV (Philips), I can say that it works with no issues and uses the same intuitive interface as the desktop app. Oh, and it also has split tunneling available, whereas, the desktop version doesn’t… damn it VyprVPN!

Gaming Apps

With the next-gen consoles doing well in the past couple of years, people started using a VPN service for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X to secure their gaming sessions. This is a great idea if you’re using a provider that’s actually working, like ExpressVPN.

VyprVPN once again disappoints by having absolutely zero support for gaming consoles. Sure, you can use it on a PC for this purpose, but you sometimes want to play games from your couch and not worry about your online security for two to three hours.

Sadly, that won’t be possible here, and you also won’t be able to stream geo-restricted content on your console due to the lack of the Smart DNS functionality.

Router Support

Router support is somewhat decent and that could be a redeeming factor for PlayStation/Xbox gamers. Besides, using a router, you can connect your gaming console to a VPN and enjoy its benefits. Here, VyprVPN supports DD-WRT, AsusWRT, and OpenWRT routers.

What’s more, you get setup tutorials for all of them, allowing you to set them up on your router in no time. If your router isn’t on the list of supported devices, you can simply flash it, install new firmware, and use VyprVPN in that case.

VyprVPN gives you tutorials for all of this, so you don’t have to go above and beyond searching for a solution if you’re an inexperienced user. However, if you want broader router support and better performance on this device, I still recommend ExpressVPN over VyprVPN.

Is VyprVPN Safe & Secure? All Security Features Examined!

In my VyprVPN review for 2024, we must talk about its level of security. That’s something the provider never had issues with but it’s interesting to see if anything’s changed in the meantime.

Bank-Grade Encryption

Let’s start with the level of encryption. VyprVPN uses 256-bit AES encryption and I’m glad that it does because it’s the last word of technology in the VPN marketplace. This encryption is used by many VyprVPN alternatives such as ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and NordVPN.

Not only that, but even the US government and military secure their connections using the same measure. This comes as standard in all applications and under no condition will the provider degrade your encryption to the lower level.

Automatic Kill Switch

Another important feature in this VyprVPN review is an automatic kill switch. This setting is easily accessible in the app (the Customize menu) and once you enable it, it supports a few customization options to make it work in your favor.

You can use the app kill switch, which will be disabled when you close the app. For example, if it’s in effect and you lose the connection to a VPN server, it will shut down your internet connection but ONLY if VyprVPN is enabled.

Disabling it means the kill switch is also disabled and your internet connection starts working. Then, there’s this System kill switch which is a more stringent measure. Here, the kill switch is active even when you turn off the app, preventing internet access without a VPN connection.

What’s more, you can even stop all LAN traffic when the kill switch is active, completely cutting yourself from the internet to hide your IP and DNS addresses.

VyprDNS

I like that VyprVPN lets you choose from two different DNS options. VyprDNS is a proprietary DNS service that only this VPN’s users can use. By selecting it, your traffic is routed through this zero-logging DNS which prevents tracking and data logging.

Without a VPN, people use a free DNS service that usually belongs to their ISPs, which makes them susceptible to tracking and spying. With this provider, it’s different, as VyprDNS really does a good job of keeping you private.

Interestingly, you can even select a third-party DNS option and enter the name of the DNS you want to use – both primary and secondary. I think this is a nice addition to people who, for some reason, don’t trust this company fully and want another DNS provider.

WireGuard + Chameleon Protocols

The protocol selection in VyprVPN’s applications is rather impressive. VyprVPN, along with its company called Golden Frog, is known for some proprietary security features, one of which is this Chameleon protocol developed for bypassing censorship.

It’s a fancy name for obfuscation that makes your VPN traffic look like ordinary traffic, thus, allowing you to bypass firewalls and various restrictions. We’ll see if this VPN works in a country like China later in the review. Another great protocol is WireGuard.

It’s the newest of the bunch and offers the fastest speeds, top-grade cryptography, and everything you need for reliable browsing and streaming. The same protocol is used by Surfshark and CyberGhost, but NordVPN also developed its NordLynx protocol based on it.

Aside from these two, VyprVPN includes OpenVPN and IKEv2, now outdated protocols that still work well. When talking about OpenVPN, it also lets you configure the port you want to use from 15001 to 20000, so it can be useful for certain situations.

By the way, there’s no option to set the protocol selection to Automatic, so the app will usually set WireGuard as the main option which you can change later on.

Public WiFi Protection

VyprVPN has something called public WiFi protection. But if you open this option in the settings menu, you’ll see that it automatically connects you to a VPN server on untrusted networks. Once you enable this option, you can add trusted networks, however.

And then, as soon as you connect to a network that’s outside of this list, VyprVPN will automatically connect you to the server. I only found it strange that you can’t choose which server to connect to, so you’ll usually be connected to the fastest possible option.

Split Tunneling

And finally, let’s talk about split tunneling. When I saw this feature on the site, I was excited because I used it to access my bank account and local shopping sites. However, as I’m using this provider on my Windows PC, I couldn’t find the feature.

It was only then that I saw that I had it on my VyprVPN mobile app. I actually found a Reddit topic where users asked VyprVPN directly a few times if split tunneling is going to come to desktop apps and they answered that it will but they don’t know when.

Mind you, that response was from 2021 and a few years later, split tunneling is still NOT found on desktop apps. Come on, VyprVPN… really?

VyprVPN IP and DNS Leak Test: No IP/DNS Leaks Found

In this part of my VyprVPN review for 2024, I think it’s time to do some practice tests and see how good this provider is at keeping your IP and DNS addresses private. As always, I will connect to a server in the US, after which, I’ll use two websites to test for potential IP and DNS leaks.

The first website I’ll use is called ipleak.net and here, you can see that the provider shows no signs of leaks, fully concealing both my DNS and IP addresses.

Next, we have a site called browserleaks.com. This site is even more thorough but after testing for DNS and IP leaks, as you can see, none of them seem to appear.

So yeah, we can say that this provider is indeed secure and you won’t have any issues with exposing your identity while connected to it.

Does It Have a No-Logging Policy?

Now that I touched on the identity, does VyprVPN store any identifiable logs? Well, I think it’s time to talk about that in my VyprVPN review. You see, this provider is based in Switzerland, which is an excellent base for a provider looking to maximize user privacy.

Let’s take ProtonVPN as an example. In my review of ProtonVPN, I concluded that it’s one of the safest providers on the market, both because of its features and a certified no-logging policy. VyprVPN isn’t as feature-rich but its unrelenting focus on user privacy means a lot.

As said, VyprVPN is the first VPN company to get a third-party security audit from Leviathan Security. What’s more, it offers a no-logging policy that you can easily access on the site and see that it stores absolutely no compromising logs.

Which Information Isn’t Stored?

In this part of the review, let’s talk about which information isn’t stored on VyprVPN’s servers. Opening up the privacy policy, you can see this information right on the screen, so vagueness is completely eliminated – I like that.

As you can see, the provider stores no logs of your IP address, VPN-given IP, connection timestamps, the content of your traffic, geolocation, and other compromising bits of info. The provider even states that it doesn’t throttle your internet connection and that it’s network-neutral in the process.

When it comes to selling your data to third parties, the provider is strictly against that. Besides, it’s a full-fledged premium provider, so it earns money through subscriptions, making sure it doesn’t need to go for that way of generating income.

Which Information Is Stored?

For a VPN service to function properly, a small number of logs must be stored. Don’t be afraid, though. VyprVPN is extremely minimalistic here and stores information like your email address, payment information, and your name.

I don’t like that they must know your name but you can always call yourself John Doe and not put your real name at least. As for payment information and email, as you can guess, this is needed for your subscription to work, so it’s something mandatory.

Of course, there are cookies on the site that follow your on-site activities, which every provider does, and that’s pretty much it. No identifiable information is stored and with a few bits of info that VyprVPN actually stores, it’s hard not to call it a great no-log Virtual Private Network.

Third-Party Audit

I know I already mentioned it in my VyprVPN review but let’s highlight it for people who may have missed it. The provider has an audit from Leviathan Security and this audit signified the beginning of its no-logging era a few years ago.

At its inception, the provider had to store some logs due to the laws and legislation in the country. However, the company was fiercely against that and it managed to “muscle” its way into the court and become a provider that stores no logs of its users.

Shortly after that, it assigned Leviathan Security to perform a full audit on all of its security features and no-logging claims, after which, Leviathan Security wrote a report that indicated that it found no problems within VyprVPN’s network.

VyprVPN scored a clear 10/10 score and since then, it has become among the most trustworthy providers on the market.

VyprVPN for Streaming: Netflix & Other Platforms TESTED

I know many people who don’t care that much about security and privacy and they’d rather use a VPN for bypassing geo-blocks and streaming. How possible is that with this one? Let’s see that in this part of my test and review.

Does VyprVPN Work on Netflix?

Let’s start with Netflix. Its anti-VPN measures are getting stronger each day but the best VPNs like ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and NordVPN still manage to unblock a good portion of its libraries. VyprVPN… well, this provider doesn’t.

When trying to watch Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix US, I couldn’t do it because the show didn’t appear, meaning that, despite having a US IP and using WireGuard protocol, I still couldn’t unblock this library.

After that, I repeated all my tests using Chameleon, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 protocols only to get the same results. Nevertheless, I also tried watching Netflix Canada by searching for the movie Midnight in the Switchgrass.

Unfortunately, the movie wasn’t there, despite it being a Netflix Canada exclusive. Finally, when searching for Naruto Shippuden and using a Japanese IP, as expected, the show didn’t appear either, signaling that Netflix Japan won’t work.

I also tested Netflix UK, Germany, and a few other libraries but none of them worked. Indeed, this is one of the worst providers for watching Netflix. Even Windscribe in its free version worked with Netflix France but this one doesn’t… such a shame.

Other Platforms?

Let’s now talk about other platforms in this VyprVPN review for 2024. With a colossal failure on all Netflix libraries, I’ll try to unblock a few other platforms like BBC iPlayer and Hotstar.

Thankfully, the provider offers servers in the UK and when using a server in this country, I thought I could watch BBC iPlayer. But after a whole minute of buffering, I received an error message. In short, BBC iPlayer didn’t work.

I don’t know how to say this but even Hotstar didn’t work with VyprVPN. I got this error message that the site can’t process my request but after switching to ExpressVPN, it worked with no issues, so it’s definitely a problem on VyprVPN’s side.

To digress, if you’re looking for a good VPN for this purpose, avoid this one like the plague. Instead, get ExpressVPN or CyberGhost as they’re infinitely better.

Speed Tests: Here’s How Fast VyprVPN Really Is

But what about overall performance and speed? Well, let’s see how fast VyprVPN is in this part of the review. The testing parameters are quite simple and as always, I tested this provider for 3 days in a row, 3 times a day, using 4 server locations.

I used servers in the UK, the US, Japan, and Australia, and I compiled the best results. The tests are repeated several times during several days just to make sure I get the most realistic results that can be used to measure its true performance.

I’m located in Eastern Europe and my native internet speeds are below:

Keep in mind that I used WireGuard as the main protocol because it’s the fastest one. If you use IKEv2 and OpenVPN, you can expect slight performance drops, especially with Chameleon, which adds obfuscation to your connection, slowing it down a bit.

Judging by the speed test results, we can say that this isn’t the slowest provider we used. But I can also tell you that it’s far from the fastest VPN service I tested and used in 2024. That title belongs to ExpressVPN, which shows far better performance than this one.

The UK server showed somewhat decent results but once I connected to a US server which is far from me, things started falling apart. Not only did my speeds reduce drastically but my ping also skyrocketed to nearly 200 ms and more than 300 ms when using a server in Japan.

In practice, this isn’t very noticeable when browsing but when streaming or downloading something… well, you will notice that everything is a bit more sluggish.

Is VyprVPN Good for Gaming?

The same can be said about gaming, which isn’t very enjoyable with VyprVPN if you’re connected to a server outside of your country. Besides, you can use this provider to play games only on your PC or mobile device, so don’t expect gaming on PS5 or Xbox with it.

I had no issues playing games with a low ping on my computer but I used a server in my country. For example, with the UK server, my ping doubled, and while that’s not alarming, I still noticed it because I play fast-paced shooters.

Gaming on long-distance servers is impossible, to be honest. With a sky-high ping and significantly slower speeds, playing such games is a chore. Except if you play, I don’t know – maybe a card game? Or perhaps chess? In that case, VyprVPN will do its job decently when using a server overseas.

I won’t talk about cloud gaming using Nvidia GeForce Now because it’s pointless. You won’t get a good experience and input lag will be all the more noticeable compared to using ExpressVPN or NordVPN.

Can I Use VyprVPN for P2P and Torrenting?

Being a solid VPN for privacy, VyprVPN already has a good base for anonymous torrenting. Luckily, P2P traffic is allowed here and you can download torrents regardless of the server you’re using. There are no specialty or dedicated servers here.

Each server in the network is P2P-friendly and the only thing you need to do is connect to one and start downloading. How good is the performance, you might be wondering? Well, to be honest, it’s not that bad if you’re using a server close to you.

You do get a bit of a speed reduction, but that reduction wasn’t alarming in my case. For example, my usual download speed is around 15 MB/s whereas, with VyprVPN, the fastest I got was around 13.3 MB/s, so it’s nothing out of the ordinary.

The important thing is that you do get P2P support here, so if you’re torrenting often, it will serve you well.

Is It Working in China & Other Censored Countries?

VyprVPN is an interesting provider because of its Chameleon protocol. After all, it’s designed and put in place by the company itself, so we can call it a proprietary protocol for connection. As said, the protocol is designed to mask your VPN traffic and make it look like ordinary traffic.

That is called obfuscation and it’s welcome in censored countries like China, Turkey, or Russia. To make sure it works – or doesn’t work – we once again assigned our testers in China a VyprVPN subscription. They tested this provider for a few days using a variety of parameters and the results are not great.

Even when using Chameleon, our friends reported that VyprVPN failed to work properly and is always detected by the firewall. Switching to OpenVPN and choosing a different port also didn’t seem to work and IKEv2 and WireGuard aren’t designed to bypass censorship either.

The good thing is that VyprVPN will work in the UAE, which is another censored country, while occasional VPN bans in Russia and Turkey will affect its usage in these countries. If you need a good provider for bypassing censorship, I can recommend two of them.

One is ExpressVPN which works with no additional tweaks and there’s NordVPN with obfuscated servers for this purpose. Both choices are far more reliable than this provider. Plus, they are at the top of our list of VPNs for China.

Servers and Server Locations: Here’s How Big VyprVPN Is

My VyprVPN review for 2024 must have a section where I talk about its server fleet and distribution. I remember this provider having 700+ VPN servers in around 70+ locations around the globe but that was a few years ago.

Interested in possible improvements that the provider might have made, I checked its servers list only to find out the exact same server network! The server fleet is simply too small for a premium provider and that’s a shame because this isn’t the most affordable VPN you can get.

On the other hand, the server distribution is “okay” to say the least. You get a lot of servers in the US, Europe, and even Africa. Countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Pakistan are here too and you can expect to find a lot of server locations in Central and South America.

I have nothing against the number of locations. It’s more than decent. However, with 700+ servers, it’s easy to overcrowd the network and decrease the overall performance, which impacts the user experience.

Just for comparison, in my analysis and review of CyberGhost, I pointed out that it has 9,550+ servers in 91 countries. ExpressVPN has 3,000+ servers in 105 countries, and even Surfshark, a far cheaper provider, has 3,200+ servers in 100 countries.

I don’t care about excuses but having a server park this small is unacceptable for a premium provider that has existed for more than a decade on the market!

Customer Support: How to Contact VyprVPN for Help?

One thing that VyprVPN does well is customer support. It offers 24/7 live chat support that’s quick to respond and solves minor issues quickly without too much effort. There’s email support too and it’s a bit slower to respond, as you’ll have to wait for more than an hour to get a response.

I also found out that not every department of support works 24/7, so the solution to your problem depends on its severity. For instance, I asked them for a free trial for reviewing purposes, and after 4 days, their affiliate partnership team contacted me.

They thought I wanted to promote their VPN but I just asked for a free trial. On a good note, the provider has a Blog section but it’s not updated frequently and months passed between the last article and the time of writing this VyprVPN review.

Is it the best support team I’ve met? Surely not, but in 95% of the cases, it’ll do its job as intended. Still, I think ExpressVPN’s support team is more concise and helpful, especially when it comes to more serious manners.

VyprVPN Pricing: Is It Affordable?

And now, we’ve come to the pricing. How much do you think a provider like this costs? Think about it for a few seconds before scrolling down. Do you think it’s cheap like Surfshark or NordVPN? Well, if you do, you’re terribly wrong.

As you can see, the pricing structure is rather simple and involves two subscription plans. You have a monthly plan at $10 per month and there’s a 12-month plan at $5 per month or $60 each year. Now, you’d say that its annual plan isn’t that expensive.

And I’ll agree.

However, if we consider what the provider has to offer, would you change your opinion? Because I sure would. ExpressVPN, which offers a LOT more than this provider, costs $6.67 a month in its annual plan and gives you 3 free months on top of that, which is just a bit more expensive.

NordVPN’s annual plan is below $4.5 a month and this provider also offers a lot more. We can also mention CyberGhost and its longest plan at under $2.5 a month, yet, this cheap provider is on another level compared to this one.

All of these providers are either similarly priced or cost way less, making this one pretty expensive given its shallow offerings.

If you still want to get VyprVPN and you don’t mind the price or the features you get, the provider will let you pay for it using either a credit card or PayPal. Unfortunately, there aren’t any crypto options.

The provider makes it simple to get a refund if you’re dissatisfied as well. Thanks to a 30-day money-back guarantee for both plans, you can get reimbursed if you don’t find the provider particularly impressive or enough for your needs.

This can be done by contacting customer support through live chat and following the steps you’re provided with. However, you’ll usually need to provide your email address and tell why you want to get a refund, and after that, it’ll be processed.

If you used a credit card, the money will be in your account in a few business days while PayPal payments are usually immediately processed and refunded.

What We Don’t Like About VyprVPN?

Now that we’re near the end of this VyprVPN review for 2024, I think it’s time to highlight what we don’t like about this provider. Simply put, we don’t like the lack of striving for improvement and perfection that many providers have.

Take a look at providers like ProtonVPN, Atlas VPN, and even ExpressVPN. All of them progress in some way, adding new features, improving performance, and being better in general. VyprVPN, unfortunately, didn’t do anything significant to make its product better.

Sure, it’s secure and is a good VPN for browsing the dark web safely, for example, but everything else just pales in comparison. It’s one of the worst VPNs for streaming, its performance is average, and device compatibility seems like it’s stuck in the early 2010s.

Not to mention the lack of split tunneling on Windows and a very – and I mean VERY small server fleet for a provider that costs this much. The provider also won’t work in China, unlike its cheaper competitors like Surfshark and NordVPN.

How Do Other People Rate VyprVPN?

Let’s now see how other people online rate this provider. We’ll use three sources from the web, such as Trustpilot, Apple Store, and Google Play. The most interesting reviews of VyprVPN can be found on Trustpilot.

Surprisingly, the provider has just 1.7 stars on this site, which means users are extremely dissatisfied. Most users are complaining about payments and how they’re renewed in different currencies, and sometimes, even without users’ consent.

Even worse, some users say that the provider didn’t refund their purchases after requesting a refund, which is quite concerning. Good reviews praise its streaming capabilities too but I noticed that these people have only 1 review on Trustpilot, which can mean these are paid reviewers.

As you can see, Android users gave this provider 4.5 out of 5 stars, usually praising speeds, low latency, and unlimited bandwidth but complaining about the fact that it doesn’t work in China.

Finally, Apple Store users gave it the highest rating of 4.7 stars, albeit, with some mixed reviews regarding device compatibility, performance, and streaming capabilities. In general, we can’t say users are extremely satisfied with VyprVPN’s shallow performance.

We’ve seen worse VPNs and we won’t deny it. This is just the case of being average, with nothing impressive to show for, despite the years of existence on the market.

Conclusion: Not Worth Your Money

So, after extensive testing, our VyprVPN review for 2024 is finally done. What can I say, except for the fact that this provider isn’t worth your money? VyprVPN has top-notch security and privacy and offers intuitive and easy-to-use apps for desktop and mobile platforms.

If we mention its decent 24/7 support and good torrenting capabilities, that’s pretty much all that’s good in this provider. I was blown away by just how bad it is for streaming, and with poor device compatibility, the lack of ability to work in China, and other notable downsides, it’s not great.

I expected a lot more from this provider in terms of the server count but with 700 worldwide servers, it can’t compete with the other, much larger, similarly-priced providers. Speaking of them, getting ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, or NordVPN is a much smarter decision.

While VyprVPN offers more simultaneous connections than all three of them combined, this is the only factor in which this provider is better. Everything else, including streaming, torrenting, performance, server locations, support, and pricing, is on these three VPNs’ side.
